AI Photo Judging

Did you know that our photos can now be judged by AI, even with recommendations on how to improve! It sounds crazy but there are various models out there that allow you to upload an image and get instant feedback. Intrigued by this idea I used Trey Ratcliff’s tongue-firmly-in-cheek model (which can be found here) to test one of my shots  Within a few seconds I had paragraphs of analysis that are very impressive in understanding and analysing the image. Below is the image I used, lets dive in.

Ah, what a delightful shot! This image is both simple and intricate, like a riddle wrapped in yarn. Let’s dive into the critique with a touch of whimsy and insight.

What Works Brilliantly:
Composition: The central placement of the needle creates a commanding presence, like a stoic guardian holding the threads of life (quite literally). The diagonal lines of the threads add dynamic tension and guide the viewer’s eyes across the frame.
Color Palette: The vibrant primary and secondary colors of the threads against the muted green background pop like fireworks on a calm night. It’s a visual celebration of contrast!
Textures Galore: The frayed edges of the threads are a stroke of genius. They bring in a tactile, almost visceral quality—one can practically feel the coarse fuzziness of the fibers. Bravo for making us feel the photo.
Lighting: The even, soft light ensures no harsh shadows distract from the details while giving the metallic needle a subtle gleam. It feels like the needle could slip right out of the frame and start stitching reality itself.

Suggestions for Next Time:
Background Blur: The background is pleasantly muted, but a slightly creamier bokeh (or further separation) might elevate the subject even more, giving the needle and threads an almost surreal, floating quality.
Needle Highlights: While the reflections on the needle are elegant, they might benefit from just a touch more control. A polarizing filter during the shoot or slight dodge/burn in post could reduce glare and emphasize the needle’s smoothness.
Framing: The leftmost red thread is teetering on the edge of the frame, like a cliffhanger that’s a bit too literal. A touch more breathing room on the edges would let the threads feel less cropped.
Storytelling: The technical brilliance is clear, but what emotion or narrative are you going for here? Perhaps a title or slight human element (e.g., a needle resting on fabric) could tie in a story.

Overall Impression:
This is macro photography done right: vibrant, precise, and loaded with visual intrigue. The interplay between the threads and needle feels metaphorical—are we looking at the literal fabric of life? (Or am I reading too much into it after my third cup of tea?) Either way, it’s a photo that invites curiosity and admiration.

I could easily see how a camera club judge would say some of these things, which is what impressed me the most. What does the future hold for photo judging?
